Genya Fox’s Gems

I bumped into this girl I use to hang with a few years back at the basement Jaxx show a couple weeks ago. Just so happens that she lives in the building across from me; she is all grown up now and rockin it.. this DJ / custom Jeweler and i decided to hook up and do a lifestyle shoot with her jewelry and it came out awesome in my opinion.
I threw a pink light form an opposing angle just to fill some shadow areas with colour and pop to give it a club like feel. I shot the images with a alien bee ring light connected to a powerpack in my back pack!
I had an amazing time hanging with her and her girls and shooting those beautiful Foxy Gems.. .. check out her amazing gems and custom Jewelry Facebook Page. Anyway here are some preview images from the shoot.
Enjoy.

The Devil Dressed in Paint
Posted by admin in Commercial, music on December 1, 2009
Finally got to shoot with Toronto Alternative/Metal band Forces. The guys were super cool and totally let me make a crazy mess … which was awesome..

The first setup was suppose to be outdoors at the water .. but .. 1. the gods didnt co-operate.. and it was super dark grey overcast but totally flat..not moody sky or anything … and it started raining about 5 mins after we started.. and looking back i should have been more prepared for the rain..
the second shot was indoors… just the boys with their instruments in a seamless jumping…lol
for the last shot I splattered paint all over the boys.. and shot them under the highway just near my place… super fun but the boys got cold… so all in all it went uber well .. but like always
enjoy the sneek peek.

Knowing your photoshop
Posted by admin in Commercial, Product on November 14, 2009
Knowing your Photoshop, how to retouch images, dodge and burn, filters, blurring and how to paint; many people including myself initially always assume there is some crazy tool or plug in that makes work amazing there isn’t. Great retouching is still a hands on thing, now i do have some quick and simple techniques for making photos pop but the real work is all done by hand on a tablet, painting it on and blending it away.
The point of all this yappin. Being great at retouching can save a bad photo and make it usable and turn a good photo into something spectacular.
The example below is good because it shows how much work goes into making something difficult like flowers in a glass bowl look amazing when the final image is done.

Shoting with Gels & Canon 7D
Posted by admin in Camera Gear, Fashion on November 13, 2009
So I have a shoot for a band coming up soon and I decided to have a test shoot and work out some makeup ideas and play around with some colour gels. Now, I realize gels are nothing new and they are a little last season, but it’s the first time I’ve ever shot with them. I had a great time and I love the way the photos look!..
Looking back at the shoot there are lots of things I would do differently.
1. Move the lights back more or the model forward – tricky because i only have a small space to shoot indoors.
2. Put a grid on the lights.. this will control a little more of the spill from the light and give me greater control.
3. Put up black curtains on the walls to prevent bounce back and too much colour blending.
4. I shot the first set on white, then switched to a grey seamless.. i really want to try black.

Basement Jaxx Video

First night out with my new Canon 7D and i shot a few clips to see what the video quality would be like and it was stellar considering.
Canon 7D
Posted by admin in Camera Gear, Party & Events, Technology, Video on November 5, 2009
I have a job coming up that is going to require some pretty high quality video so I sold my 40D and upgraded to the new Canon 7D.
Right off the bat I WAS IMPRESSED. The new features and changes are slick as hell. Lets see the ISO goes up to cloud 9. and its fast.. at everything… Also I can fire both my 580ex flashes without a one of them being on camera or using that overpriced remote you gotta buy when using previous Canon models.
The video is super clean and the camera shake is pretty minimal considering.. But I do recommend playing with settings a bit, i found the video a little over saturated/contrast.
The next bestest thing is the interface.. super nice and easy to get around and options, custom settings everything is so easy to use.. granted I shot the basement Jaxx party last night and I had a hard time not pressing the wrong buttons (they swapped the order of a couple buttons compared to the 40D) but I’m sure after a few days of shooting Ill have it down pact.
I also hooked it up to the EOS Digital Professional App and .. well the app sucks for doing post but you can tether it to the camera and run the video from it.. which i was pretty stoked about.(I am working on a more in depth write up of the tethering features video in particular over the next few weeks as i get familiar with the 7D)
THE BIG SHIT THING!!.. NO RAW SUPPORT FOR APERTURE. F#@% Me!.. I only realized that after getting home from shooting some Food/Drinks etc for a local Toronto cafe. I am not happy about this… but i guess that is the way it goes.. Ill be shooting RAW +Ljpeg till they get that fixed.
Here are some shots from the Basement Jaxx party in Toronto at Century Room!

Nuit Blanche
Despite feeling like the installations were a little lack luster, well those that I managed to see, I did have fun~ I ended up riding around the city with my friend Santiago from 9:30 pm till just before 4am when we ran into the Rivoli for a drink before close. UM THEY RAN OUT OF MOST BEERS .. we had stella light … boo that.
This year NuitBlanche was different than every other year I’ve been. First off, I’ve never seen so many people on queen street in my life.. it was insane . I think the overload, the sheer assault on the senses being surrounded by so many people kinda made me loose focus of the art and I became much more aware of the people.
Here are some of the photos from the night, I started shooting the night with my fixed 50mm 1.8, brought out my 24-70 a little later and took a couple shots with my flash on but i really wanted to play with ambient only. There is something about natural light that is becoming more and more intriguing to me as I get more confident with my camera. I also think I took more pictures of bikes around the city including mine (parked in front of the no parking sign) than I did of actual instillation’s!.. lol
